Entreprepreneurial Speaker Series: Matt Edgar and Jodi Edgar

Matt Edgar, Principal at Sawtooth Capital Management, LLC 

Matt Edgar is the principal at Sawtooth Capital Management, LLC and Edgar and Edgar CPAs, LLC. Sawtooth Capital Management, LLC is a registered investment advisory firm that caters to high net worth families and individuals. Sawtooth is a value-based investment advisory firm that focuses on proper financial and investment planning and prudent diversification and investment allocation. Edgar and Edgar CPAs, LLC is a Texas Certified Public Accounting firm that offers personal and business tax preparation and consulting, as well as outsourced CFO services.

Prior to forming Sawtooth and Edgar and Edgar CPAs, Edgar owned an equipment truck rental business, Liberty Fleet Services, LLC, with his brother, John, a finance graduate of the McCoy College of Business. Liberty Fleet owned a fleet of large construction and hauling trucks and provided these trucks to construction firms in multiple industries.
Prior to forming Liberty Fleet, Edgar was the North American business manager for ASRC Energy Services, an Alaskan Native Corporation. During his time at ASRC, he was responsible for the business management of four subsidiaries with approximately $300 million in gross revenue. These business units were diverse and included manufacturing, environmental consulting, and engineering.

Edgar is an active supporter of Texas State University. Matt sits on the board of the Texas State Development Foundation, where he serves as the vice-chair of the investment committee. He is also a member of the Texas State Bobcat Club Leadership Council, where he was instrumental in putting together the First Annual Houston Bobcat Club Leadership Council Golf Tournament, which raised over $18,000 for student-athlete scholarships.

Edgar received a BBA in Finance from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. He is also a proud MBA graduate from the McCoy College of Business. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Texas and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder. Edgar is also a member of the Texas Society of CPAs, the American Institute of CPAs, the Houston CPA Society, and the CFA Institute.

Jodi Edgar, Controller of BasinTek, LLC

Jodi Edgar is the Controller of BasinTek, LLC, a privately owned manufacturer of downhole drilling tools. The company is headquartered in Houston, Texas, with manufacturing facilities in both Houston and Leduc, Alberta. BasinTek was officially formed in 2010 and grew rapidly to a company with over 100 employees and $90 million in revenue in 2014. BasinTek transformed from a start-up to one of the leading providers of rotors and stators in the industry in a short four-year time frame. Edgar was part of the management team that successfully sold BasinTek to Abaco Energy Technologies in October 2014 for $360 million.

Prior to joining BasinTek, Edgar served various Controller and Accounting Manager positions at Schlumberger, the world’s largest oilfield service company. She successfully managed a team of 12 accounting staff and implemented policies and procedures at the newly created Schlumberger North American Financial Hub located in Houston, TX. In her role as Eastern US Controller at Smith International (acquired by Schlumberger), Edgar oversaw the financial statements for 20 field locations spanning from Buckhannon, West Virginia in the Marcellus Shale to Alice, Texas in the Eagle Ford Shale. Her responsibilities for these field locations included providing financial expertise to operations management as well as overseeing the work of the field personnel to ensure compliance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP). The Eastern US region generated approximately $200 million in annual revenue.

Edgar began her career as an auditor for the Texas State Auditor’s Office in Austin, Texas where she audited state agencies and higher education institutions. She made her entrance into the oil and gas industry as an internal auditor for W-H Energy Services. W-H Energy Services was acquired by Smith International and then subsequently acquired by Schlumberger. She now has over a decade of experience working in a finance capacity in the oilfield sector.

She received a BBA in Finance from Texas State University in 2002. as well as an MBA from Texas State, in 2004. Edgar is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of Texas, as well as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). She is also a member of the Texas Society of CPAs, the Houston CPA Society, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the CFA Institute. Edgar is a partner in Edgar and Edgar CPAs.

Matt and Jodi are both proud Texas State alumni  and have donated funds for student athlete scholarships, McCoy College of Business scholarships, and they proudly funded the 2015 Inaugural Matt & Jodi Edgar Texas State Undergraduate Business Plan Competition. The Edgars live in Cypress, Texas with their two children, Heidi (6) and Jeffrey (3).
