Student Organization Spotlight - ALPFA

Take a moment to get to know Dennis Mina, senior finance and accounting major and president of the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting.  ALPFA is the premier organization for expanding opportunities for Latino leadership in the global market. It expands opportunities for students who seek careers in business, accounting, finance, and related professions by empowering them to develop as leaders through the management of student chapters, delivering quality student programs focused on professional development, providing access to the industry network of professional members and sponsors, offering access to scholarship programs and creating opportunities to network with other students. Membership is open to anyone who shares the values, mission, and principles of ALPFA.

Q: What does ALPFA have planned so far for the 2013-2014 school year?
For spring 2014, ALPFA plans to reach out to all the students at McCoy in every discipline of business.  ALPFA is an all-encompassing organization dedicated to bringing opportunities to all majors.  Our plans include networking with more professionals, alumni and faculty in order to provide our members all the benefits that come with being part of ALPFA. We have communication with our national chapter and other local chapters to poll our resources together in order to enhance membership experience.
Q: How will your major and ALPFA help you reach your goals?
My majors in finance and accounting have helped me tremendously in reaching my goals. Having knowledge in both majors allows me to evaluate financials for my current job as a credit analyst and to determine proper valuations required when making commercial loans. Being part of ALPFA has provided me numerous amounts of networking opportunities with both fellow peers and with professionals.  ALPFA has given me experience in being part of a team and on being a leader; both qualities being crucial to a career in business.
Q: What resource on campus do you recommend for students to utilize?
The biggest resource on campus I recommend students to utilize is Career Services. From talking to other students, not everyone knows all the services provided; i.e. mock interviews and on-campus interviews with recruiters.  Participating in mock interviews is extremely helpful in getting over the interview anxiety most interviewees experience and some questions can throw you for a loop if you haven’t practiced answering it beforehand.  Employers participating in the on-campus interviews are specifically looking for Bobcats to hire and interviewing at the LBJ Student Center makes it convenient.
Q: What is your favorite part about Texas State?
I have so many favorite parts!  However, the one I enjoyed the most was being part of the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF).  SMIF gives all participants real-world experience of what it takes to evaluate portfolio performance and to make holding recommendations.  This course, in my opinion, was the most challenging and the most rewarding.  It challenges you to manage several projects simultaneously, examine economic conditions and to determine strategic moves. Presentations are vast, research never-ending and team work essential.  I truly believe SMIF provides the opportunity to develop close friendships with peers; my closest friends now are people I worked with.
Q: What do you think is the ‘key to success’?
I think the ‘key to success’ is not being afraid to ask questions. More and more often I have found that employers and faculty alike don’t expect us to have extensive knowledge in our field. Hiring managers are looking for individuals who can formulate questions and are willing to learn through the process.

Business Learning Community Visit McCoy Headquarters

The business learning community toured McCoy’s Building Supply headquarters and retail store on Friday November 8th. The tour is a chance for students to see the behind-the-scenes corporate operations of McCoy College of Business’s namesake company. Student toured the retail location on Wonderworld Dr, where the store manager answered questions from students.  Afterwards, students headed to McCoy’s corporate office.  BLC members had the chance to hear real world operations from each department from a series of speakers. Megan McCoy, the granddaughter of Emmitt and Miriam McCoy, concluded the presentation with a history of the company and her family before opening the floor to a Q&A session. We are so grateful for the opportunity to tour the impressive facilities each year and give students the chance to network with the amazing staff of McCoy’s Building Supply.

Student Organization Spotlight: CEO

Take a moment to get to know Kasey Smetana, President of Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization (CEO) chapter at Texas State University, an award-winning group of entrepreneurs and business students. CEO is a global network that informs, supports, and inspires college students to be entrepreneurial and seek opportunity through enterprise creation. Every fall semester, more than 1,600 students, faculty, and others interested in entrepreneurship attend a 2 1/2 day CEO Conference in Chicago, IL, where students come together to network, compete in a variety of different competitions. Over 80 outstanding entrepreneurs and business leaders share their ideas and expertise with students on how they launched their businesses, the lessons they've learned, and where they are today.

Q: What does CEO have planned so far for the 2013-2014 school year?

Next year we will be hosting our Annual Golf Tournament. All the proceeds are donated to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Also we will be hosting our first ever “Bobcat Competition” where there will be a show and raffle. We will also be selling our legendary tanks and Bobcatopolies, so that we can raise money to go to Florida for the National Conference in October 2014. We will also be helping with the Business Leadership week in February.

Q: How will your major and CEO help you reach your goals?

CEO has brought me so many opportunities already. Because of CEO I have been able to network with many students, not only through the organization and McCoy, but also throughout the CEO National Organization. My goal from the beginning was to get over my fear of speaking in front of people. This last week, we attended our National Conference where I was a keynote moderator and introduced Chris Heivly, CEO of MapQuest, in front of 1500 students and entrepreneurs. Since I have faced my fears, I have been able to make such great connections with both students and professors.

Q: What resource on campus do you recommend for students to utilize?

I think that students often forget to use their professors as resources. Yes they are teachers, but most of them have firsthand experience. I talked to professors all the time in person even if it’s not about grades. Most professors are there to help you succeed and give you advice that you cannot learn in the classroom. They will also bring you really great opportunities. I am Teacher’s Assistant for Mr. Lawrence Herring and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had this year.

Q: What is your favorite part about Texas State?

McCoy! This business school has been the best thing for me. The professors are very helpful and the students actually have their “heads on right”. When I came to college, I wanted to take it seriously. Once I got through basics and into McCoy, my whole view of college changed. A few weeks ago I was invited by the Dean to a Distinguished Alumni Luncheon where I was one of about 10 students who got to meet Mr. Tom Roddy. I would never choose a different major or a different school!

Q: What do you think is the ‘key to success’?

I believe that if you want to be successful, you have to step out of your comfort zone. You sometimes have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations and work hard to get over them. Keep your eyes on the goal, and just keep taking the next step towards completing it.

Student Organizatoin Spotlight: Net Impact

Take a moment to get to know Kimberly Cardenas,  co-president of Net Impact, a business-minded, project-driven undergraduate student organization. Members work to enhance social, economic and environmental practices on campus, in the community and around the world.

1. What does Net impact have planned so far for the 2013-2014 school year?
Every project Net Impact has in store are all unique in terms of impacting different areas on the community. The sophistication of these projects continues to grow, and so does their complexity to where it helps each member become a more educated and experience person.

1. Green Racing: Technology Transfer from the Raceway to the Driveway. A one-of-a-kind discussion about racing technologies with world-class panelists at the exclusive Velocity Lounge at the Circuit of The Americas!

2. McCoy College of Business Undergraduate Chapter has been selected as one of three finalists for 2012-2013 Net Impact Undergraduate Chapter of the Year!

3. Net Impact's initiative to a better community and environment through Small Steps, Big Wins: http://smallsteps.netimpact.org/TexasStateUniversityTSU

4. Adopt A Spot, San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department.

5. Circuit of the Americas Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix, Sustainability Research.

2. How will Net Impact help you reach your goals?

It made me gain knowledge of my authentic leadership style. Ever since I joined Net Impact, I have been involved in many different projects that will only better me and strengthen me to help me reach my goals. Balancing my assertiveness with a supportive leadership style has helped me become visible, pushed me to achieve many different accomplishments, showcase my skills, and build a reputation both with Texas State University and the real world.

3. What resource on campus do you recommend for student to utilize?

The campus bookstore is a wonderful place, especially for those moments when you run out of paper or break a utensil. However, it is more than just school supplies and books, contrary to the name. You will also find shirts, keyrings, and even cards here. This comes in especially handy if one of your friends has a birthday coming up and you can’t make it off campus.

The library. The place that you either hate, love, or love to hate. There’s no denying that the library can, in fact, be extremely helpful. If you ever need a quiet place to study, this is your go-to spot. Be sure to dress comfortably, too!
Another hugely beneficial part of the library is, of course, the books and  resources. Using either the reference librarian or, the online database, you can find tons of books and articles for any papers or projects you may have.

 4. What do you think is the "key to success"?

The key to success may be described as the realization of an aim and for the realization of any aim hard work is essential. Hard work helps us to develop our potential to the maximum and strive for excellence in any field. In the
long run, it makes us better prepared to face adverse situations. Success is all around us; it helps an athlete to persevere in a race and win it , it helps an average student to become extraordinary, it helps to transform someone's
future.
