Are you interested in estate planning, taxation and property ownership?

If you need an Advanced Business Elective or Free Elective, FIN 4380I - Intro to Trust Principles, is still open for Fall 2015.

The course will explain the principles of estate planning, taxation and different forms of property ownership. A focus will be on the characteristics, administration and usage of trusts, retirement plans, guardianships and powers of attorney. Students will follow the process of creating and administering a trust.

In the course, you will also be able to:
  • Describe the purpose and scope of personal agency relationships
  • Analyze a will and examine the probate process in administering and settling an estate
  • Distinguish the types of gardianships that exist and compare powers of attorney for property and healthcare
  • Define what a personal trust is, reasons for having one, and the characteristics of a good trustee
  • Describe the parts of a personal trust document
  • Analyze basic concepts of trust administration
  • Explain the reasons for -and tax concepts of- gifting
  • Contrast various types of irrevocable trusts
  • Distinguish a land trust from a personal trust
  • Describe corporate trust and agency services that corporations utilize
  • List the types of corporate retirement plans that exist and profile the establishment and administration of a retirement plan

If you are a finance major, this course will NOT count as an Advanced Finance Elective.

    McCoy College Professorships



    Dr. Denise Smart, Dean of McCoy College of Business Administration, recently announced Dr. Ha-Chin Yi as the Tom & Jo Roddy Excellence Professor in Finance and Ms. Vicki West as the Dean Paul R. Gowens Excellence Professor in Business Administration. Both of these professorships are being filled for the first time and will be held for a three-year term.
     

    Dr. Yi’s research is primarily in the field of corporate finance, specifically bank loan financing.  His articles have been published in Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Economics and Finance, and Journal of Financial Research, among others.  His research is expanding into the area of investments with a focus on behavioral finance and retirement planning.  Dr. Yi’s work has been recognized with several awards and invitations to speak at national and international conferences.  Dr. Yi serves as a reviewer for several journals and currently is a member of the editorial review board of Global Business and Finance Review.  He has taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate finance courses including corporate finance and investments.

    Ms. West, a member of the Department of Marketing, serves as 
     director of the Center for Professional Sales.  She has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Along with teaching in the sales area, she also teaches Studies in Free Enterprise, and is known for the competitiveness of the students and teams she oversees as faculty advisor.  Last year her Enactus/SIFE team won the U.S.A. national championship going on to international competition in Beijing.  Ms. West shares her insights through research published in journals such as Journal of Marketing Education and Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship, among others, and through serving on the national SIFE advisory board, mentoring and consulting.

    When your choices are Jones, the Den, Harris, and the Lair, it's often easiest to go for the burger and fries.  This presentation teaches students about the food guide pyramid, my plate, and gives great ideas for healthy eating to promote life-long wellness.
