Global Issues in Sustainability and CSR

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will address the global issues and current trends in sustainability, and corporate social responsibility. The quadruple bottom line of social, environmental, cultural, and economic responsibility will be explored. Corporate Social Responsibility is defined as responsibility to all stakeholders, not just shareholders. We will discuss the drivers of sustainability, and such topics as:

·         CSR

·         Role of the UN, World Bank, IFC, and other multi-lateral organizations

·         Public Private Partnerships

·         Green building

·         Conflict Minerals

·         Supply chain responsibility

·         Stakeholder engagement

·         Cause and social marketing

·         Environmental responsibility

·         Socially responsible investing

·         Sustainability reporting

·         Transparency

·         Human rights

·         Climate Change

Instructor’s Overview:

The course will be taught via the case study method and student-led Learning Teams methods. The first week of class, we will create 4-5 learning teams from the class. Each class period a learning team will present the case assigned for that class period according to the course outline (see below).  Each team will present roughly three cases. We will also learn from some lecture, guest speakers, and a capstone research project. There are no exams – this class is focused on applied learning. 

This class will count as an advanced business elective, advanced management elective, or a free elective. Even though it is listed as a management course, you must get department approval from the Finance & Economics Department. SHRM serves the needs of the human resource management professional by providing the most essential and comprehensive set of resources available. In addition, SHRM is committed to advancing the human resource profession and the capabilities of all human resource professionals to ensure the HR is an essential and effective partner in developing and executing organizational strategy. SHRM has more than 575 chapters in over 130 countries, SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to furthering the interest of the human resource profession.

Q: Give us a brief summary of your organization.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) at Texas State is the student chapter of the world’s largest HR professional society, representing 285,000 members in more than 165 countries. For nearly seven decades, the Society has been the leading provider of resources serving the needs of HR professionals and advancing the practice of human resource management. SHRM has more than 575 affiliated chapters within the United States and subsidiary offices in China, India and United Arab Emirates.

The Texas State University Chapter provides students with internship opportunities, learning initiatives, and professional speakers to link theory, laws and content, while increasing knowledge as to the effective management of human capital (people) in business. The chapter prepares students for careers in management through networking, camaraderie, respect and mutual support among chapter members and information exchange.

We have food, fun, and prizes at all meetings as well!

Q: How has your organization helped you grow as a student and future professional?

This organization has helped me move outside of my comfort zone. I joined last year and was not an active member outside of the meetings, when at the end of the year I took a chance and applied to go on a case competition. Little did I know at the time I would be competing against universities all around the nation with an all inclusive trip paid for by McCoy to represent Texas State much less that I would be the Chapter President the next year. I’ve met so many people and learned to conquer my fear of public speaking letting me evolve my leadership skills into what they are today. 

Q: What makes your organization special/unique?

What makes SHRM so unique is that after college you can transition into a national chapter for the rest of your professional career. The immensity of resources is incredible including workshops and conferences. I would say the biggest benefit of joining both the Student and National Chapter is the amount of support you receive from colleagues, peers, and so forth. 

Q: What is something you wish someone would’ve told you before you started your college journey?

I think every college student has heard the cliché sayings of “don’t procrastinate” or “be fearless” but those two things have always hindered me. I am a procrastinator by nature, which is somewhat due to my fear of failure. However I have learned that failure is inevitable but it is only as permanent as you permit it to be. Be fearless in your efforts to reach your destiny and mostly try often! Start today, no matter how tired you are, stay up and study an extra hour. Join an organization, meet people and network, take ownership of your path and be great.
