Executive Director, Texas Land Conservancy (TLC)
Mark Steinbach is the Executive Director of the Texas Land Conservancy (TLC), a statewide non-profit (501c3) land conservation organization. TLC is what is referred to as a land trust, which primarily works with private landowners to conserve land that has exceptional aesthetic, historic, or biological value. Steinbach joined the TLC staff in 2007 as the Executive Director. He answers to a 15 person Board of Directors that govern the organization. His primary responsibilities include negotiating land transactions, managing an office and staff, major gift fundraising, and oversight of a portfolio of more than 100 conservation projects totaling more than 85,000 acres statewide.Steinbach previously worked at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, where he was a private lands wildlife biologist providing technical assistance to landowners in the Hill Country, in addition to collecting data for wildlife studies and performing statistical analysis.
Steinbach earned his bachelor's in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences and master's in Rangeland Ecology and Management, both from Texas A&M University. His master's research focused on Texas landowners and their knowledge of conservation policy and land management techniques. Steinbach received his Ph.D. from the University of Montana in Missoula from the College of Forestry and Conservation. His dissertation and post-doctoral work focused on land fragmentation in the Rocky Mountain region. While at the University of Montana he taught a graduate-level class in the wildlife biology program called “Aldo Leopold and the Land Ethic.”
Steinbach is a 5th generation Texan, whose family owns and manages a farm in Washington County that has been in their family over 100 years. Steinbach previously served on the Board of Directors for the Texas Land Trust Council 2008-2014, and acted as the Chairman from 2010-2011.
