September Student Organization of the Month: Accounting Club

Get to know Ivana Valdes, senior accounting major and president of the Accounting Club. The Accounting Club provides a place for students with similar academic interests to meet, establish friendships, communicate ideas, and acquire valuable knowledge of the accounting profession. The purpose of the organization is to recognize and encourage an active interest in the profession of accounting and to keep abreast of advances and trends in the accounting field. The accounting club is supported by the Members, Alum, and the Accounting Department which, in any combination, help to form a network of friendships and opportunities that can be called upon for guidance, insight, and recommendations.

Q: How will your major and the Accounting Club help you reach your goals?
My major in itself has a lot of jobs to offer, it is a good time to be an accountant right now because there is a huge demand for them. As for the Accounting Club, I give full credit to the club for the internship I have lined up starting in the Spring, those internships usually lead to full time jobs once it is completed. Accounting Club has helped immensely, I would not know the importance of networking without it or how to present myself in front of future employers.
Q: What resource on campus do you recommend for students to utilize?
I would say the advising center is a big one so that every semester you make sure you are taking the right classes needed to graduate on time. In addition to taking the right classes, I find it extremely helpful to join any kind of organization. It shows future employers you can communicate with other people and multitask, not just study and make good grades. Employers want well-rounded students.

Q: What has been the most meaningful part of your McCoy Experience?
The most meaningful part of my McCoy experience has to be by far being part of the Accounting Club, it has opened tremendous opportunities for me personally and I see it work wonders for a lot of students as well.

Q: What makes your organization special/unique?
The most special aspect of Accounting Club has to be the job offers our members receive. Our students go into the recruiting process prepared and knowledgeable, representing Texas State University well. Not only do we put them in front of employers and create relationships with them, but we all meet other students going through the same exact process. It is helpful to have multiple people to talk to about interviewing, networking, resumes, and even classes. Every individual experiences it differently, and it is a great resource to be able to hear all those different experiences. I have made some of my best friends after meeting them at Accounting Club.

Q: What is something you wish someone would’ve told you before you started your college journey?
To join an organization and forced me to do it! I did not join anything until my junior year in college and I wish i would have done it sooner. I believe my first two years would have been more easy going. Truth is, professors told me to, I just did not listen or realize the importance of it. I am so happy I finally listened.

Q: How can students join your organization?

They can come to meetings, we meet on Thursdays at 5pm in Room 243 for the rest of the semester, we do have one meeting left in room 119, that is the 9/18 meeting. (Not all Thursdays) Our schedule can be found on the Accounting Club websiteDues for the Accounting Club are $20 per semester but free pizza is provided at the end of every meeting so its pays for itself very quickly. Those can be paid to the Accounting Department in McCoy 431.
