Student Organization Highlight - American Marking Association

Take a moment to get to know Mervin Medina, a senior Marketing major and president of the American Marketing Association. The mission of the American Marketing Association is to advance the practice and appreciation of marketing for students and professionals who seek to increase their knowledge and skills through national and local programming. They are the only organization that provide direct benefits to marketing professionals in both business and education and serve all levels of marketing practitioners, educators, and students.

 

 

 

What does the American Marketing Association have planned so far for the 2013-2014 school year?

 

We have so much planned for this upcoming year! Every year we host over 50 professional development events. These events include our bi-weekly speaker meeting, workshops, and our Annual Etiquette Dinner and Regional Conference. We hope to add some new events this year so stay posted! These events are designed to provide students with skills that they can take into the workforce, as well as giving students the opportunity to listen to professionals from different industries. On top of this we will continue all of our community service and fundraising projects while adding in some new ones. We have been working hard all summer and we are excited to get the year started!

 

 

When you’re not studying or attending class, what are you doing?
 

I am probably working. I am a Manager at the Fossil store in the San Marcos Tanger Outlets. Whenever I do get some free time, I enjoy relaxing with friends. Going to the movies, floating the river, or maybe taking a walk down South Congress are always fun things to do. What I always do on my free time though is catch up on my soccer news. I am a soccer fanatic and really enjoy following it and getting to watch games throughout the week.

What is your favorite restaurant in San Marcos? Your favorite dish?
 

I have a few favorite places to visit. It really just depends on what kind of food I am in the mood for. One place I really enjoy eating at is Garcia’s because it has a laid back atmosphere and the food and service is always great. My favorite dish though would have to be BBQ. I really enjoy grilling and eating BBQ. My favorite BBQ place would have to be Blacks in Lockhart.  

 

 

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

 

I hope to see myself in a position that I love and have the ability to utilize my skills. There are so many interesting positions and fields in Marketing that the possibilities are endless. I just want to be involved within a firm or marketing team of which I can play a meaningful role and grow as a person and increase my knowledge of the Marketing industry.

 

What do you think is the “key to success?”

Personally I don’t think that success can be boiled down to just one factor or trait. Some of the factors that I believe are important for success are time management, hard work, dedication, staying organized, and trying new things. When you are in college there are so many things of which you can get involved with and can clutter your life. This is also true when you are graduating and getting ready to enter the workforce. Learning how to manage your time is something beneficial and can lead to success. A big one for me is staying organized. I have so much going on that it is easy to lose track of stuff or to forget things. Taking time to organize my things and maintaining it has really helped me succeed. A good tip is to maintain a planner with all of your important dates and meetings. I have one everywhere I go and it has helped me tremendously to stay organized!

Save the Date: InternInAustinFair

This event is organized by the Mayor of Austin, Governor's office, area Chambers and Business Organizations, and SureScore (the company that recently acquired Campus2Careers) with the goal of connecting students with Fall internships and jobs at the local small businesses, nonprofits, and startups who may not recruit on campus.  InternInAustin is part of ACC's 40th Anniversary Celebration this year, so an even bigger turnout of employers, local leaders, and students from area colleges and high schools are expected.

Alternative Bus Service

While the Bobcat Tram Interurban bus service is nearing completion, there are several service alternatives beginning August 26th if you live between Austiin and San Antonio. You can find more information on the Bobcat Shuttle home page and summarized on a stand alone page.

Alternatives include two bus service providers from Austin (CARTS and My Shuttle Home), carpool information for Austin or San Antonio, and vanpool information for Austin or San Antonio. 

 

·         CARTS is planning 5 round-trips a day from several locations in Austin.  For more information, the direct link is:  http://www.shuttle.txstate.edu/BTI/Alternatives-to-BTI/Austin-Bus_CARTS.html.

 

·         My Shuttle Home is planning up to 7 round-trips a day but requires pre-purchase before the beginning of the semester.  For more information, the direct link is:  http://www.shuttle.txstate.edu/BTI/Alternatives-to-BTI/Austin-Bus_MyShuttleHome.html.

 

·         Vanpool service is available by Capital Metro in Austin and VIA in San Antonio.  The direct link for Austin service is http://www.shuttle.txstate.edu/BTI/Alternatives-to-BTI/Austin-Van_CapMet.html and the direct link for San Antonio service is:  http://www.shuttle.txstate.edu/BTI/Alternatives-to-BTI/SA-Van_VIA.html. 

 

·         A ride sharing database managed by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) will provide free carpool matching service for anyone traveling to the San Marcos or Round Rock campuses from Austin or San Antonio.

 

While there is still no bus provider identified between San Antonio and San Marcos, a notification will be sent to students, faculty and staff if service becomes available.  Continue to check the BTI Alternatives web page, http://www.shuttle.txstate.edu/BTI/Alternatives-to-BTI.html, periodically as additional service providers will be posted as soon as they are identified.

Student Organization Highlight - McCoy Ambassadors

Take a moment to get to know Jordan Becker, a senior Finance major and president of the McCoy College Ambassadors. The McCoy College Ambassadors are a select group of students chosen each semester and recognized as active student leaders and representatives in McCoy College.

 

 

Q: What do the McCoy Ambassadors have planned so far for the 2013-2014 school year?

As always with every year, we will be hosting Business Leadership Week here in McCoy in February. As McCoy College Ambassadors, we will be promoting, ushering, and helping overall with BLW. We also will be participating in Bobcat Build, as it has shown to be a great team building day for us while also helping out our neighbors in the Greater San Marcos area. Something new this year that we really want to participate in more are the workshops offered by Career Services and Mr. Ross Wood. From networking, resume construction, and even a LinkedIn workshop, there are plenty of opportunities for McCoy students to polish up on their professional skills. The MCAs will be more hands on with these workshops this school year. 

 

 

Q: What are your interests?

I have a wide range of interests, from sports, fishing, reading, music, cooking and grilling with friends. Definitely being a Bobcat, floating the river is a big staple in my leisure time. Also, I am a huge fan of the Texas Country music scene in San Marcos and New Braunfels. I really enjoy the small bands around here who's music and stories are much more relatable than those of the big Nashville stars. I love going to see shows like the Dirty River Boys, Turnpike Troubadours, and Reckless Kelly, whether it be at Cheatham Street or Texas Music Theater here in town, or numerous venues in New Braunfels, Kyle, and all throughout the hill country. I have even picked up the guitar myself and have learned quite a bit from talking to band members after shows. Definitely something that wouldn't be possible anywhere else.

Q: Do you have any unusual study tips?

A study tip I would say that is a little unusual is that I do not recommend studying for long periods of time. After so many hours, studies show you retain less and less of what you study at a constant pace. If I have a final or big exam, I will start studying several days early. I try not to study any longer than an hour at a time. I may study an hour, then do something for 15 minutes or so (like play my guitar) until I go back to my studies. I've found it to help me stay focused, as well as lower stress

Q: What do you think is the key to Success?

My personal key to success is time management. We are all here to learn, obtain a degree, and prepare for a future career. Also, we need to find out who we really are. I know I have changed greatly since I first stepped foot on campus in the fall of 2010. Once the studies are out of the way and all work is done, be sure to make some time for yourself. Learn new things. Try new things. Meet new people. Get involved. As you develop as a person, you find out what is really important to you, which will help you as a student. We are here to learn, but it's okay to have a little fun along the way. 

Q: Why do you think it’s important to be involved?I cannot stress enough the importance of being involved on campus. Joining an organization on campus connects you to so many different people, and we all know how important networking is in the business world. By getting involved, you will meet and befriend like-minded people. Surrounding yourself with friends who have the same goals and aspirations as you will keep you on the right path. We are all human, and benefit from a sense of belonging. Eventually, holding an officer position in a student organization will give you a sense of accountability and responsibility that will benefit you greatly in the professional world.
