Student Organization Spotlight: Society for Human Resource Management

Take a moment to get to know Juelane Desjardin, senior management major and president of the Society for Human Resource Management. SHRM serves the needs of the human resource management professional by providing the most essential and comprehensive set of resources available. In addition, SHRM is committed to advancing the human resource profession and the capabilities of all human resource professionals to ensure the HR is an essential and effective partner in developing and executing organizational strategy. SHRM has more than 575 chapters in over 130 countries and is the world’s largest association devoted to furthering the interest of the human resource profession.


Q: What does SHRM have planned so far for the spring semester?
-        We have participated in the Student Involvement Fair, the Business Leadership Fair, and Business Leadership week by having a guest speaker at our SHRM meeting

-        We have a HR Professional Conference that we are attending in March in Arizona

-        We are participating in the Student Case Competition at the Conference with an undergraduate team and a graduate team

-        We have professional HR speakers planned and scheduled for the rest of our SHRM meetings

Q: How will your major and SHRM help you reach your goals?
-        My goal is to build a career in the HR field. With my Business Administration in Management Degree and experience with SHRM, I will have the knowledge, skills and abilities to help me succeed with my goals and future.

-        SHRM has given me the ability to connect and network with HR professionals, abilities to win scholarships, and received an HR intern through SHRM

Q: What resource on campus do you recommend for students to utilize?
-        I recommend students to check out the 3rd level in the McCoy building where student organizations have postings about their organization, reach out to professors who have connections with other professionals, and become a part of an organization!

Q: What is your favorite part about Texas State?
-        I am extremely appreciative for the guidance that Texas State’s professors provide for the students and the abundant amount of organizations that Texas State supports. Whatever you are interested in, whatever your dream is, whatever career you want to accomplish, you can find the information here at Texas State and the support you need to accomplish your goals.

Q: What do you think is the ‘key to success’?
-        Success means something different to everyone; therefore the key isn’t identical for everyone. Each individual has to sit back and think about what they want. What really makes them happy? I believe that happiness is success, so the key is to find what makes you happy.

Crafting a dynamic resume that is also a great selling tool is more time-consuming than 60 minutes. Yet, with the following quick and easy visual and marketing “style-over” tips, you will begin to distinguish yourself from the job search mob! That sounds good… doesn’t it?

Where is your Hometown?
I was born in Norristown, PA, but moved to Austin, TX when I was 4 years old. I consider Austin my hometown since I did most of my “growing up” there.


What was your major(s)/degree(s) and where did you go to school? 
I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Psychology and a minor in Business.
 
 
Why did you pursue a career in higher education? 
My interest in pursuing a career in higher education is rooted in my own personal experiences. During my undergraduate years, I became aware of the factors that shape, influence, and sometimes inhibit the academic progress of students. Working in advising, I have gained the knowledge and professional experience to help students navigate through their academic careers. I feel privileged to work with students and enjoy watching them develop and make connections between their academic interests and personal goals.


What is your favorite part of working for Texas State University? 
My favorite part of working for Texas State University is definitely the students. I love seeing them grow both personally and professionally throughout their academic career. Knowing I can contribute to their development means the world to me. 
 
 
What “words of wisdom” would you like to share with students? 
“What you do today can improve all your tomorrows” – Take advantage of all the resources the University has to offer. There are so many you can utilize including the writing center, math lab, SLAC, professors, career services, and academic advisors. We want to see you succeed!!

 
Tell us a random fact about yourself: 
My husband and I are huge 49ers fans. We went to the Super Bowl in 2013 to cheer on the 49ers and hope to see them return soon!

Application for the Pat Tillman Foundation Scholars is now open - due March 6, 2014


The Pat Tillman Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of the annual application process for the Tillman Military Scholarship. As a supplement to the Post 9-11 GI Bill, the scholarship covers direct study-related expenses, including tuition and fees, books and living stipend, for eligible service members, veterans or military spouses who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate degrees as full-time students at a public or private, US-based accredited institution. The application for the 2014-2015 academic year will remain open until Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 11:59:59 EST at www.PatTillmanFoundation.org/scholarship.

Thursday, February 20 at 2 p.m. in 126 McCoy Hall
 
Dr. Greg Snodgrass, Ph.D. retired Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of the Counseling Center, and his wife Sara Jo Snodgrass, M.Ed., SPHR, retired Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, New York Life Insurance, Long Term Care Division will present “Mental Health in the Workplace.”
 
Dr. Snodgrass came to Texas State in 1978 as a Staff Counselor in the Counseling Center and an Assistant Professor of Psychology after receiving a Ph.D. in Counseling and Educational Psychology from UCLA. He received his Master and Bachelor degrees from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.
 
Sara Jo earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Houston and her M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas at El Paso.
 
This lecture will provide an excellent opportunity to hear from two experts in the fields of higher education, human resources, and counseling.  This event fits into the Common Experience for 2014, “Minds Matter: Exploring the Realities of Mental Health and Mental Illness” and the Business Leadership Week 2014 theme, “Mental Health in the Workplace: It’s good for business.”

 Keynote Speaker Dr. Octavio Martinez, Jr.

A native Texan and licensed psychiatrist, Dr. Octavio N. Martinez, Jr. is the fifth executive director and the first Hispanic to lead the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health since its creation in 1940. As chief executive officer, he oversees the vision, mission, goals, strategic planning and day-to-day operations of the foundation. He is an associate vice president of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and a clinical professor at the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. He is also an adjunct professor of psychiatry at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He currently serves on the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Mental Health Workforce for Geriatric Populations. He is on the board of the National Hispanic Council on Aging. He is a commissioner on the Supreme Court of Texas Permanent Judicial Commission for Children, Youth and Families and a member of the University of Texas-University Charter School Advisory Board. From 2002 to 2006 he served as a Special Emphasis Panel Member for the National Institutes of Health, National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Dr. Martinez is licensed to practice medicine in Texas and North Carolina and is board certified. He has a master’s degree in public health from Harvard University’s School of Public Health, a doctorate in medicine from Baylor College of Medicine, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in business administration with a concentration in finance from The University of Texas at Austin. He also completed the Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard Medical School.

Student Organization Spotlight: National Association of Black Accountants

Take a moment to get to know Basil Brown, a senior accounting major and president of the National Association of Black Accountants. The NABA is focused on developing, encouraging and serving as a resource for greater participation by African-Americans and other minorities in the accounting, finance and business professions.  They assist minority students in entering the accounting and finance profession by developing professional skills of its members and provide opportunities for members to network and fulfill their civic responsibility.  In addition, they participate in chapter, regional, and national programs.


Q: What does NABA have planned so far for the spring semester?
We have a goal to be very active this semester. We meet every other Thursday in McCoy 127 at 6:30 after Accounting Club. At those meetings, we have professional speakers that give information on how to bridge the gap between being a full time student to having a full time career. We will also participate in Bobcat Build this semester. On February 20th we will help Accounting Club and Beta Alpha Psi at an event welcoming Wayne Berson and many other BDO professionals. NABA also takes pride in having a presence in the Volunteer Income Tax Program (VITA). VITA is a free service that prepares simple tax returns for the community. We also have Study Nights with NABA where we tutor students in accounting classes. Those study nights are scheduled for February 27th and April 10th.

Q: How will your major and NABA help you reach your goals?
The National Association of Black Accountants helps its members reach its goals by using the motto to help students and professionals succeed in corporate America. The motto is “lifting as we climb.” NABA is a national association that gives it members a way to network at various events throughout the year, help each other with business ideas, and give opportunity to the underrepresented minority in the business world. After our meetings every other Thursday, it makes me want to go pick up a book and study. The connections made with NABA reach across the country. That fact helps student and professional members reach their career goals.

Q: What resource on campus do you recommend for students to utilize?
The resources that I deem most useful at Texas State are Jobs for Cats and Ross Wood. Texas State University brings employers and recruiters to us instead of us having to go to them. Ross Wood gives us his tips on what to say and how to act during the various job fairs and interview opportunities. Career Services helps bobcats with attaining interviews and job placement after we graduate.  These are two resources that I believe every bobcat should use.

Q: What is your favorite part about Texas State?
My favorite part about Texas State is how friendly the student body is here. When I walk around on campus, I get a feeling that I can meet a lifelong best friend every day. The students here are eager to include any and everybody that shares the same passions no matter what it is.  There is an organization or a club for just about anything you can think of.  Texas State creates the atmosphere that makes you want to get involved.

Q: What do you think is the ‘key to success’?
If there is a key I certainly do not have it yet. However, I like to live by the saying, “if you don’t pay the price, you pay the price.” It means if you do not do the things you need to do to achieve your goals now, then you are either going to have to do them with more effort later or just throw in the towel and fail. For example, if I put off studying for test 1, 2, and 3, then I will have a bad grade going into the final exam. If I still want to achieve my goal of getting a high grade, then I have to study those same pages in the book that I put off months ago or I will fail at reaching my goal. The basic meaning is to try to be proactive because either way it goes you are going to pay a price. The price is either time and effort or a failed/repeated attempt at a goal. So why not work hard at the beginning  and reap a benefit? I don’t have the key to success, but until I do I am going to use this quote as a motivator for me and my date with the CPA exam sometime in the imminent future.

Purchase your ticket for the American Marketing Association Regional Conference this Friday


 
This year’s regional conference will focus on enabling students to gain a better understanding of new marketing strategies in the ever changing marketplace. Companies must adapt to the changing needs and demographics of its consumers. The regional conference will focus on identifying those needs and how as marketers we can best use them to our advantage. Also, for the first time a mini case competition will be a part of the event.

The Retention Management and Planning Office is coordinating a Campus Resources Scavenger Hunt during the month of February to help students connect to Texas State resources. This fun activity will allow students to visit multiple offices on campus and learn more about what they have to offer. Prizes will be awarded to students who complete the entire scavenger hunt by Friday, February 28, 2014.
