Student Organizatoin Spotlight - Hispanic Business Student Association

Take a moment to get to know Cesar Vasquez, a senior respiratory care major and president of the Hispanic Business Student Association. The goal of HBSA is to  prepare members for their future endeavors and encourage them to become great leaders while building business acumen and professional skills. The organization welcomes all majors, ethnicities and classifications. Their dedication to promote diversity stems from Texas State University's goal to encourage the advancement of Hispanic college students in the business world.

Q: What does HBSA have planned so far for the 2014 school year?
Spring 2014 is going to a busy semester for the Hispanic Business Student Association (HBSA). HBSA has many events planned for its members and the community. Our events will help our members grow as professionals and help build their resumes as well. This spring we’re planning a Corporate Trip in which we will be traveling and visit a variety of professional companies to gain more knowledge about the corporate world. The purpose of this trip to give our members an idea of what type of career path they would like to pursue.

Q: How will your major and HBSA help you reach your goals?
My major in respiratory care and minors in healthcare administration and sociology have given me much insight about not only the healthcare field, but the business world too. Healthcare administration is a similar to business management because healthcare administrators ultimately become managers in the hospital atmosphere. HBSA has given me many great attributes that helped me build not only as a student but also as a professional. HBSA has contributed to my growth in public speaking, leadership, and teamwork skills which will help me reach my goal to work in the healthcare field.
Q: What resource on campus do you recommend for students to utilize?

The best resource to use on campus is Career Services; it provides students with many tools they can utilize while at Texas State and post-graduation.  Career Services has many tools such as helping you connect with employers, resumes building, and much more! They also host a Job Search Boot Camp which consists of several workshops including resume building, social media, how to dress professional, and mock interviews with real employers! They can also help you decide what major to pick if you have a hard time deciding or are unsure.

Q: What is your favorite part about Texas State?
My favorite part about Texas State would have to be the atmosphere. Everyone is truly friendly and respectful towards each other. The professors care about their students' success in their class. For example, one time I saw a student fall from his motorcycle at a light because it was raining and the next thing I saw were three other students rush over to assist him. I will always remember that scene because it showed Bobcats are there for each other, regardless if they know each other or not. A quote I heard someone say was “Texas State may not be UT, but UT isn’t Texas State."

Q: What do you think is the ‘key to success’?
I believe the “key to success” is to never give up! Never give up on your dreams, in what you believe in, in your future. Students should strive for what they want to be when they “grow up”, and not let other things/people have a negative influce. Push yourself to the best of your abilities and don’t make excuses. Employers are always looking for hardworking individuals that will stand out from the rest. I believe once you give up, you start facing barriers that will inhibit your ability to succeed.
